Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The Holy Spirit that Christ had promised to his disciples came on the day of Pentecost (Jn 14.26, 15.26; Lk 24.49; Acts 1.5). The apostles received “the power from on high,” and they began to preach and bear witness to Jesus as the risen Christ, the King and the Lord. This moment has traditionally been called the birthday of the Church. We, by our own membership in the Church, have received “the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit” in the sacrament of chrismation. Pentecost has happened to us. The Great Vespers of Pentecost evening features three long prayers at which the faithful kneel for the first time since Easter.
The Fast of the Holy Apostles is dated back to early years of the church. The first evidence of this fast is found in the writings of St. Athanasius the Great (†373). The famous pilgrim Egeria mentioned the Apostles’ Fast also in her fourth-century-writing which records that “on the day following the feast of Pentecost, a period of fasting began”. We simply abstain from certain foods and generally eat less. At the same time we are taught to pray more, attend services more frequently, and to increase our generosity to others (alms). The fast of the Apostles begins on the second Monday after Pentecost and concludes on the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul on July 12. Most of Christendom will know nothing of any of this – that Orthodox Christians will have begun a Lenten period while the world begins to think of vacations.
Vidovdan is a Serbian national and religious holiday celebrated on June 28. The Serbian Church designates it as the memorial day to Saint Prince Lazar and the Serbian holy martyrs who fell during the epic Battle of Kosovo against the Ottoman Empire on June 28, 1389. It is an important part of Serb ethnic and Serbian national identity.

Драга браћо и сестре у Христу,
Дух Свети кога је Христос обећао својим ученицима, дошао је на дан Педесетнице (Јн 14, 26; 15, 26; Лк 24, 49; Дела 1, 5). Апостоли су примили „силу одозго“, и почели су да проповедају и сведоче Васкрслог Христа као Цара и Бога. Овај догађај се по обичају назива рођендан Цркве. И ми смо као чланови Цркве примили „печат дара Духа Светога“ кроз Свету тајну Миропомазања. Педесетница се догодила и нама. На великом вечерњем после Литургије на Педесетницу, читају се три дугачке молитве, за време којих клечимо први пут након Васкрса.
Апостолски пост датира из раног периода Цркве. Прво сведочанство о овом посту налазимо у списима Св. Атанасија Великог (+373.г.). Чувена ходочасница Егерија помиње апостолски пост у свом спису из четвртог века и каже: „ У данима након Педесетнице почиње период поста“. Ми се једноставно уздржавамо од одређене хране и једемо мање. Истовремено настојимо да се више молимо, одлазимо на богослужења, и умножавамо дела милосрђа. Апостолски пост почиње у други понедељак након празника Педесетнице, и траје до Петровдана, који се слави 12. јула. Многи хришћани и немају представу да Православцима почиње период поста док остатак света размишља о годишњим одморима.
Видовдан је српски национални и верски празник који се слави 28. јуна. Српска Црква тог дана слави спомен Св. Кнеза Лазара и српских мученика који су пострадали у боју на Косову 28. јуна 1389.г. , борећи се против Османског царства. Косовски етос је важан део српског националног и верског идентитета.
