Brief History of the Stevan Stojanovic Mokranjac Choir of Chicago
Although the choir from Old Holy Resurrection church has a long history, under different names, and under various directorships, the Stevan Stojanovic Mokranjac (SSM) Choir began in the 1980’s. Fr. Djuro Krosnjar as the residing priest found a young and talented Mirjana Jovanovic, then only 18 years old, to lead the choir. She directed for nearly 18 years, leading on Sunday’s for Liturgical worship and then on various sacred concerts and SOCA Festivals. Vojin Trifunovic would occasionally direct the choir. Replacing her was the talented Olga Bojovic and then Melita Zdravkovic.

Current History
Currently, the Stevan Stojanovic Mokranjac Choir is lead by Svjetlana Glisic, with the president of the choir, Dr. Milena Tatic Bajich. Practices are on Monday evenings usually at 7:30 in the main hall of the church. The choir sings praises on Sundays and for holidays as well as during weddings, baptisms, and funerals. They prepare for SOCA (Serbian Orthodox Choral Association) usually in the first week of June each year and attend other concerts and choir events of Orthodox choirs nationwide. The choir will usually host a sacred concert once a year and other events. SSM is always looking for great voices to join and become part of a welcoming and encouraging group. All are welcome and encouraged to attend!
